The Lining of the small intestine contains spherical folds, which slow the movement of the partly digested food through the intestines, and get an increased surface for absorption.

Folds are covered with small finger-like projections called villi, which extends the surface area of the intestine.

Villi contain cells to transport substances into the bloodstream. Villi do not aid in the digestion of nutrients, but with nutrient absorption.
