The image shows how the two cells appear before and after placing in a hypertonic solution.Based on the behavior of the cell, identify the cell types?

If the whole cell shrinks after placing it in a hypotonic solution, then that cell is an animal cell.

But if only the interior portion of a cell shrinks then it is a plant cell because the cell wall persent in it does not allows the cell to shrink, by applying equal pressure as exerted due to interior shrinkage.

Like in this pic the cell 1 is an animal cell whereas cell 2 is a plant cell.

Hope it helps you.

If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution there will be a net flow of water into the cell and the cell will gain volume.

Explanation:

  • If you place an animal or a plant cell in a hypertonic solution the cell shrinks because it loses water ( water moves from a higher concentration inside the cell to a lower concentration outside ).
  • A single animal cell ( like a red blood cell) placed in a hypotonic solution will fill up with water and then burst.
