The picture shows the color change of lime water and the teacher told the students that because of the carbon dioxide reaction in the lime water, it is the source of the carbon dioxide reaction in the lime water is:

  • Carbon dioxide gas is released when dilute hydrochloride acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate.
  • When the gas released in the reaction passes through the lime water, the lime water turns into milk or a white rain of calcium carbonate forms.
  • This ensures that the gas is carbon dioxide.
  • Reaction between lime water, a solution of calcium hydroxide, Ca (OH) 2, and carbon dioxide will lead to the formation of a soluble substance called calcium carbonate, CaCO3.
  • Ca (OH) 2 (aq) + CO2 (aq] → CaCO3 (s) ⏐ ↓ + H 2O (l) .
  • The solution will be milk because calcium carbonate is a white liquid.
