X: Violet, Y: Green, Z: Red.

  • This phenomenon of splitting of white light while undergoing refraction through a prism is known as dispersion.

  • This dispersion occurs due to difference in deviation of various component colours of the white light.

We know that :

  • VIOLET COLOUR experiences maximum deviation whereas RED COLOUR experiences minimum deviation while undergoing refraction.

  • So, in the diagram , X will be Violet because it is experiencing maximum deviation towards the base of the prism.

  • Y will be Green because it is experiencing moderate deviation towards the base of the prism.

  • And finally , Z will be Red, because it is experiencing the least deviation towards the base of the prism.
