IMMEDIATE CAUSE OF THE REVOLT:-
- Introduction of the new cartridges for the Enfield rifle.
- Rumours spread as the newly introduced cartridges were greased with the pig and cow fats
- The soldiers refused to use the cartridges as the Hindus considered cow to be devotional and the pork was considered forbidden by the muslims.
- On 25 th March 1857, soldiers revolted against their British seniors in Barrackpore
- Soldiers who involved in protests including Mangal Pandey were court martialled.
- Protests spread to other centres from Barrackpore.
- This was the immediate cause of the revolt of 1857.
