IMMEDIATE CAUSE OF THE REVOLT:-

  • Introduction of the new cartridges for the Enfield rifle.
  • Rumours spread as the newly introduced cartridges were greased with the pig and cow fats
  • The soldiers refused to use the cartridges as the Hindus considered cow to be devotional and the pork was considered forbidden by the muslims.
  • On 25 th March 1857, soldiers revolted against their British seniors in Barrackpore
  • Soldiers who involved in protests including Mangal Pandey were court martialled.
  • Protests spread to other centres from Barrackpore.
  • This was the immediate cause of the revolt of 1857.
