Answer: It is true.  After the defeat of the last Bengali nawab, indigo cultivation started in Bengal in 1777. Because of the demand of blue dye in Europe indigo planting became hugely commercially profitable. The soil of bengal was very fertile. And the The indigo planters persuaded the peasants to plant indigo instead of food crops. They provided loans, called dadon, at a very high interest. They signed fraudulent deal with the farmers. The cultivators were forced to grow indigo in place of food crops. And the harsh fact is the fertility of soil decreased due to the cultivation of indigo. Which leaded to a revolt.
