The reason behind the defeat of many Indian rulers in 18 century is that there was lack of unity among rulers. There was not the feeling of nationalism among them. And great rulers like nizam of Hyderabad and others actively supported the British. Indian rulers became lazy and allied with the British. Lack unity, lack mutual plans lead to many lost battles. You can indirectly say that the rulers were either fooled or won over.

The Indian rulers lost many battles because they didn’t have unity in themselves.
