Most of the Indian soldiers were Hindus who considered cow as a sacred animal or Muslims who considered pig to be a dirty animal. The British introduced greased cartridges made up of cow or pig meat which were to be opened by mouth. Indian soldiers were discontent because it hurts their religious beliefs. They were treated inferiorly compared to their British counterparts.

The British officers treated the sepoys rudely. The sepoys were paid much less than the British soldiers and were also given inferior food and accommodation.
