There were numerous reasons for Indian people's outrage against British.

Firstly, the British introduced policies which challenged the authority of local leaders. The doctrine of Lapse was also unpopular and moreover, the royal family was also shifted from the Red Fort to more obscure Qutub Sahib. Although the emperor had real little power, he was a symbol of prestige for Indians.

Secondly, it was part of the British tradition to spread their "superior" culture wherever they went. An English administer says, "one shelf of a good European library is worth the whole native literature of India and Arabia". This was unacceptable to most of the Indians.

Thirdly, British missionaries came to convert Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs (three major religions of the subcontinent) into Christianity. They set up English medium schools which taught Christianity and they forced people who worked for them to follow christian teachings. This caused much resentment.

Then, after the War of 1857, British took over the administration and passed the Proclamation act of 1858 which put India under the direct rule of Britain.  A Viceroy or Governor-General was appointed to run the daily affairs of the country. He was to be advised by a 15 member council. No Indian was given opportunity even i the Civil Services.

Last and the foremost, the Rowlatt Act was passed which had to face much resentment. Before that, Press Act and Arms Act was passed. Rowlatt Act allowed trials without bail and relocation of people from their homes. Press Act disallowed anything being published against the British government. Arms Act disallowed Indians to keep a weapon. Most unpopular one was the Rowlatt Act which lead to the Jalianwala Bagh Massacre in which General Dyer opened fire on a crowd of almost 5000 people. Dr. Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal, nationalist leaders were also deported.

Explanation:

  • The Indians started to express outrage against Britishers as they hold the proper control on Indians and India. During the British rule in India, the Indians were living their life as slave.
  • They had no freedom and authority. Britishers were exploiting them for their own interest. The Britishers had control on all the administrative powers.
  • The formulated the policies which were favouring only English officers. Indians were paying heavy taxes. All these create hatred among Indian people against British people.
