The Indo- Gangetic plain receives rainfall in the winter months of December and January that are termed as retreating monsoons because of the presence of westerlies.

These Westerlies originate in west Asia near the Mediterranean Sea and travel towards east and cross countries like Iran, Pakistan and touchdown on India.

The Himalayas acting as blockages turn the westerlies parallel to Tibet, wherein they shower down as rain bringing rainfall in the regions of Indo- Gangetic plains or also called as "north Indian River Plain"- a fertile plain that includes most of "northern and eastern India", eastern Pakistan, almost "all of Bangladesh" and south of Nepal.
