In the old regime, the French society was divided into three estates; the clergy, the noble and the third estate- the common people as peasants.
The third estate made up about 90% of the population but about 60% land was owned by the nobles, church and richer people.
The members of first and second estate enjoyed the privileges and free from taxes. The third estate had to pay all taxes, render services in the Lord's houses and fields. They could not take wood from the forests and they had to pay the grazing tax. The third estate had to pay various taxes like Tithe to the church, another taxes are Taille, Lucille, etc. and innumerable direct and indirect taxes on the articles used in everyday consumption, like salt and tobacco to the state.
The burden of these taxes was borne by the Third Estate alone. This was social inequality.

1The French empire was divided into 3 estates but only the third estate had to bear the burden of paying taxes.
2.Only a small amount peasants owned the land they cultivated.
