The inert pair effect in the carbon group results from :

  • Firstly before answering this question we should know what inert pair effect is and how it is takes place.

  • So, the inert pair effect is represents the reluctance of the valence electrons to take part in the chemical combination due to their penetration in the nucleus of heavy elements .

  • It shows the tendency of two electrons in the outermost atomic s orbital to remain unshared in compounds that comes after Transition metal. Hence it is tightly held by nucleus and do not take part in bonding.

  • The carbon group belongs to the 14th group and the last element outermost atomic orbital is 6s so due to it's contraction into inner core results into the lower energy of 6s orbital.
