The title of the play 'Dear Departed' is ironical. In the beginning of the play, we come to know that grandfather Mr. Abel has departed from this world.

the title of the drama 'THE DEAR DEPARTED' is very ironical. the title refers to Abel Merryweather who was neither'dear to the characters, nor was he departed'.The main characters the Slater and the Jordan consider him dear as long as they feel that he is a dead man who has left a few things and some money for them.He becomes a bad man and 'a drunken old beggar' as they learn that he has not paid the premium of insurance.
the bigger irony is in the word 'Departed'. they departed him and therefore dear. when suddenly he is alive and active, they says 'he is out of senses'.
