Given info : the ionization constant of formic acid and hydrocyanic acid are 1.78 × 10¯⁴ and 4.9 × 10¯¹⁰ respectively.

To find : how many times formic acid is stronger than hydrocyanic acid ?

solution : ionisation constant for acid is also known as acid dissociation constant, it is quantitative measure of the strength of an acid in a solution.

so higher the value of ionisation constant of an acid, higher strength of acid will be.

here ionisation constant of formic acid = 1.78 × 10¯⁴ unit

ionisation constant of hydrocyanic acid = 4.9 × 10¯¹⁰ unit

it is clear that strength of formic acid is higher than that of hydrocyanic acid.

now strength of formic acid/strength of hydrocyanic acid = 1.78 × 10¯⁴/4.9 × 10¯¹⁰

= 0.36 × 10⁶

≈ 3.6 × 10⁵

Therefore the formic acid is 3.6 × 10⁵ times stronger than the hydrocyanic acid.
