Adults cannot fit into the chimneys, so children were used as chimney sweepers. There are many dangers of allowing children up the chimney. In the poem, it says, 'In soot we sleep'. This tells us how tiring and dangerous it was to allow people up into the chimney. The soot can cause many infections and sleeping in there can lead to death. It is also very clear from the poem that the children are not happy with the job that they are doing. Little Tom Dacre cried so when he had to shave his white hair and saw a dream of how chimney sweepers, who were locked up in black coffins, was freed by an angel with a key. This tells us that the children felt like they were locked up and unfree
