The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor began just before 8AM on Sunday, December 7, 1941. Within a short time, five of eight battleships at Pearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, with the rest damaged. Several other ships and most Hawaii-based combat planes were also knocked out, and over 2,400 Americans were dead. Was the devastation of Pearl Harbor a result of American unpreparedness, or of superior Japanese planning?

Hi....
It's a superior Japanese planning... It was a screat attack made by the Japanese with out informing American. The Japanese didn't not attack the ship repairing industry which made Americans recover fastly and attack Germany again..

Answer:
Both
Explanation: during the time that Japanese planes were on route to attack Pearl harbor their planes were already detected by radar though despite Billy Mitchell's pleads that it was an attack it was disregarded thought that they were American.
The Japanese had already practiced and planed their attack with a look alike harbor and wooden dummy ships. With fear of America's naval might.
