The journey of a river from its sources to its mouth is divided into three stages –upper (or early)
middle (or maturity), lower (or old stage).
Upper course or early stage-In this stage the river is young .It flows over steep mountains where
its rate of weathering and erosion is maximum. It forms striking youthful feathers like I shaped
valley, V shaped valley and waterfalls.
Middle course or Maturity Stage-The River enter into the plain. Here the volume of water
increase and slope of land decreases resulting in slow speed of the river .In this stage river flows
through meander.
Lower Course or Old stage- When the river meets the sea the river become large and divides
into several distributaries. The river deposits silt, sediments and sands over a large area near its
mouth forming a triangular fertile land called Delta.
