Explanation:

The storytelling is pretty straightforward, but after multiple viewings in a row you start to realize that there's more going on than you realized.

A great example that I noticed was the progression from the animals calling Mowgli a "man-cub" into them calling him a "boy". At first I thought I had caught a mistake, but then you realize that they never say "man-cub" again and... whoa.

The intro/title is amazing (from cartoon-ish Disney castle to CGI jungle), the story makes sense with little to no plot holes, the scene where Mowgli holds his mom wolf before he leaves is surreal, the boy who plays Mowgli puts on a great performance, and there are very few times in the movie where the CGI doesn't feel convincing.

The biggest complement I can give this film is that most of the scenes project exactly what you should be feeling at that time. Ka's part is unsettling, anytime that Khan is chasing Mowgli it feels intense, Mowgli's relationship with Bill Murray feels natural.

But, we have to talk about Christopher Walken's singing... (shaking head). It's tolerable, but it's really rough. The rest of his performance is fine and I understand why they casted him for this role, but his singing feels incredibly strained.

My other complaint would be the very subtle pee joke a porcupine says that makes no sense, but it's so small I'd imagine no one even notices it.

Word of warning to parents with small children, there isn't much blood in this film, but there are some pretty intense scenes, a few jump scares, and three-ish deaths that happen so consider this your heads-up.

Overall though, this movie is one of the (if not the only) bright spots in these live-action Disney remakes so far (we'll see how Mulan does), and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this film to anyone
