"The Kabuliwala" is about an Afghani man who comes to India to earn a living as a dry-fruits vendor. He became friends with the narrator’s 4-year-old girl, Mini who had a habit of chattering all the time. Kabuliwala was her most patient listener, save her father. Mini reminded Kabuliwala of his own daughter back home. One day, Kabuliwala accidentally kills a man who had bought shells from Kabuliwala and denied to pay him the money. During his hearing at the court, he tells the truth that he killed the man in spite of being asked by lawyer to lie. Impressed by his honesty, the judge gives him imprisonment of 10 years. When he is released from jail, he visits Mini whom he had missed a lot in jail. But, now grown-up Mini has forgotten him and he get scared that his own daughter must have forgotten him too. Mini’s father helps him financially to go back to Afghanistan. Kabuliwala returns to his home hoping that his daughter still remember him.
