Synecdoche is said to have been used when a part refers to the whole, In the poem 'Ozymandias' the phgrase the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed is an example of synecddoche where hand means sculptor who built the statue of the king and heart refers to the king i.e. Ozymandias who gave in to emotions like contempt and conceit.
Metonymy : While using metonymy a thing refers to something that it is closely associated with, though it may not necessarily represent the whole as is the case in a synecdoche. Generally the use of 'the crown' for a monarchy and 'the sword' the military power are the examples of metonymy.
an example fom Richard Russo's novel The Straight Man'
'When I drift back into sleep, I can't help thinking that it's a wonderful thing to be right about the world.' Here, Russo uses the world to mean not the understanding of the entire world, but it refers to the understanding how life works in a particular society of the world.
