The poet describes how a kitten is all set to pounce on its prey. She is sitting on a wall playing with leaves fallen from the cider tree. Suddenly, the kitten notices its prey and she warms up to catch it.

At first, she bends forward and then straightens herself. Then she makes one magnificent leap and lands quite near the prey. When the frightened animal tries to make its escape, she hastens her steps and pounces on the prey as deftly as a conjurer performs his tricks on stage.
