The average landholding size of an household has shrunk marginally to 1.1 hectare (ha) in 2015-16 from 1.16 ha three years ago, according to a rural survey carried out by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard).

There are nearly 140 million landholdings in India with an average size of just above 1 ha (1.15 ha). Two-thirds of these holdings are marginal (<1 ha) with an average size of 0.39 ha only (Agricultural Census, 2014).
