Laputa is a flying island described in the 1726 book Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. The inhabitants of this island were called as the Laputans.

The Laputans mainly consisted of educated people, who are fond of mathematics, astronomy, music, and technology and the remaining were servants. But they failed to make practical use of their knowledge.

The Laputans were depicted as so lost in thought and abstracted in astronomical, mathematical and musical calculations. Their scientific discoveries revealed that the world might come to an end. This discovery led to lack of sleep and enjoyment with instilled fear.
