"     The evolution of the Hindu-Arabic number system was around 800 A.D.  This system is most commonly used for the "symbolic representation" of numbers in the world till date. It composes of 10 symbols ("0", "1", "2","3", "4", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9").

      These digits are "descended" from the "Indian numerals". In Hindu- Arabic system, a sequence of any number of these digits in any order is read as a whole number. This type of reading numbers was discovered by Indian mathematicians. The "largest" of these 10 symbols is 9. Hence, the largest digit used is the number 9."
