SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The largest number that divides 138 and 233 leaving remainder 5 in each case

EVALUATION

Let x is the greatest number that divides 138 and 233 leaving remainder 5 in each case

Since x divides 138 and 233 leaving remainder 5 in each case

Then x will divide 138 - 5 , 233 - 5

So x divides 133 and 228

Now

133 = 7 × 19

228 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 19

HCF = 19

Hence 19 is the largest number that divides 138 and 233 leaving remainder 5 in each case
