The larynx contains a pair of muscular flaps called the epiglottis.
- The larynx is a hollow, complicated organ in the neck's anterior midline region. In its typical location, it is anterior to the esophagus and located between the third and sixth cervical vertebrae.
- It is made up of a cartilaginous skeleton that is suspended from surrounding structures by membranes, ligaments, and muscles. It is located just above the trachea and connects to the oropharynx (the part of the throat that is posterior to the oral cavity) above it.
- The epiglottis, or rima glottidis, is a cartilaginous flap that extends in front of and above the laryngeal intake (glottis).
- The epiglottis' job is to block the laryngeal inlet during swallowing, preventing food and liquid from entering the lungs (aspiration). This is why we can't (and shouldn't) talk and swallow at the same time.
