M. Hamel was exceptionally patient on the day of his last lesson. He looked quite somber. He did not scold Franz for being late and not answering the questions on participles.

At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak. At last he wrote ‘Vive La France’, which means 'long live France' and gestured the dispersal
