But still, the last man is quite different from the previous five people mentioned in the poem. While the earlier men were having prejudice and discrimination against a particular group who contrast with them in terms of social class, religious faith or colour, the last man was not prejudiced. He was rather selfish and did everything only for gain. He would give something to those who could give him something in return.

a stubborn opportunist in such circumstances like a chill winter evening is as bad as the earlier people, all of whom were unwilling to share their logs for helping others

Answer:

These lines are taken from the poem THE COLD WITHIN by James Patrick Kinney.

Did naught except for gain. 'Forlorn' means lonely, sad and hopeless. Here all the six persons were bearing discriminatory feelings in their minds. Even in the moment of distress, when life was at stake, they could not overcome the petty barriers of class, race, and religion that divided them.

Explanation:

the forlorn group in the poem Cold Within refers to the sad group of 6 people who lacked warmth and compassion in them and didn't use the log of wood which all had with them. and finally, all died not due to the cold outside but due to the cold inside. they had shown racial, cultural, and financial discrimination.  The title of the poem, 'The Cold Within' is suggestive of the central theme or message of the poem and thus is just and apt. They died because of the hatred they had amongst themselves, they wouldn't have died if they helped each other and given the fire a boost.  The cold within' means the lack of warmth within, born out of selfishness, greed, arrogance, etc. It is because of these negative feelings, 'the cold within', that they do not give up their sticks of wood which could have kept the fire burning and kept them alive.

People have to pay the price when they let their prejudices control their actions. These prejudices make us insensitive towards other people and we tend to behave inhumanly. We regard other people as inferior or hostile and lose compassion. We end up losing everything.
