Successors of Ajatshatru (462-326 B.C) :- After Ajatshatru's death Magadha gradually lost its position. The dynasty of Bimbisara was overthrown by shishunaga , the governer of Benaras. The Last King of the shishunaga dynasty, Kalasoka , was murdered by Mahapadama Nanda. He became the ruler of Magadha.

Ajatshatru :- (495 to 462 B.C.) Ajatshatru was the son of Bimbisara. He ruled for about 32 years. He pursued the policy of expansion and conquered Kosala, Kashi and Vaishali.

He called the first Buddhist Council in Rajgriha in 487 B.C. Ajatshatru' also built a fort, which afterwards became the new Capital and was called Patliputra (Modern Patna in Bihar).
