❥Earth's interior is generally divided into three major layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core.

❥The outer core is molten and liquid iron and nickel, while the inner core is solid and much more dense than either iron or nickel at the surface.

The three main layers of the earth are :-

  • Crust
  • Mantle
  • Core

1). Crust- It is the outermost layer of the Earth. It constitutes only 1% of the Earth's mass. It consists of continents and ocean basins. It is mainly composed of alumino-silicates.

2). Mantle- It is a dense, hot-layer of semi solid rock approximately 2900 km thick. This layer is composed mainly of ferro-magnesium silicates.

3). Core- Below the mantle is the core. It makes up nearly one -third of the mass of the Earth. This layer consists of two cores- inner and outer. The outer core is made up of iron and is very dense. The inner core is made up of solid iron and nickel.

More to know :-

Seismic waves are vibrations in the body of the Earth. Knowledge of the Earth's interior is based on the reactions of seismic waves, from earthquakes to the density and state of materials that they encounter. Seismic waves travel at differing speeds through different materials (and also, at different speeds through material of different states, i.e., liquid or solid). Because we know the size of the Earth, by measuring how long it takes to pick up on seismic activity on opposite sides of the Earth, we can gauge about how much of the Earth is solid, liquid, made of a certain material, etc.
