The leaves of trees like the Mapple are green in summer and turn orange red in autumn . Find out the reason for this colour change . Does it mean that these plants do not carry out photosynthesis in autumn ?

No, the Maple performs photosynthesis even with red leaves.

  • Photosynthesis takes place in the presence of green pigment called chlorophyll.
  • Maple tree contains other pigment anthocyanin which gives red color to the leaves.
  • In summers, when plenty of sunlight is available, chlorophyll count is high and it masks the other pigment making the leaves green.
  • Whereas in autumn, available sunlight decreases due to which chlorophyll containing chloroplasts start dying. When this happens count of pigment granting red color increases and imparts red color to the leaves.
  • Thing to notice is that chlorophyll is still present but the quantity is less.
