Solution:

Let the breadth of the original rectangle be x cm,

the its length = (x + 9) cm

Area of the original rectangle = x(x + 9) cm²

New breadth = (x + 3) cm

New length = (x + 9 + 3) = (x + 12) cm

Area of the new rectangle = (x + 3)(x + 12) cm²

According to the given condition,

Area of new rectangle — Area of original rectangle = 84 cm

→ (x + 3) (x + 12) – {x(x + 9)} = 84

→ (x² + 3x + 12x + 36) – (x² + 9x) = 84

→ x² + 15 + 36 – x² + 9x = 84

→ 6x = 84 – 36

→ x = 48/6 = 8

Therefore, breadth of the original rectangle = x = 8 cm

and length of the original rectangle = x + 9 = 17 cm.

Check :

In original rectangle, we have length = 17 cm

and breadth = 8 cm

Area of original rectangle = 17 × 8 = 136 cm²

For the new rectangle, breadth = 8 + 3 = 11 cm

and length = 17 + 3 = 20 cm

Area of new rectangle = 20 × 11 = 220 cm²

(Area of new rectangle) — (Area of original rectangle)

= 220 – 136 = 84 cm²

Hence, the solution is correct.
