In such questions, the best method it to assume as variable in place of a quantity so that we can relate other quantities to it.

Let the width of the rectangle ( denoted by b ) be ' x ' inches.
Therefore as per the question,
Length of the rectangle, l = ( x + 4 ) inches
Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 ( l + b )
But according to the question,
Perimeter of the rectangle = 34 inches
So,
2 ( l + b ) = 34
2 ( x + x + 4 ) = 34
2x + 4 = 34 / 2
2x + 4 = 17
2x = 17 - 4
x = 13 / 2
x = 6.5 inches
So,
Breadth of the rectangle = x = 6.5 inches
Length of the rectangle = ( x + 4 ) = ( 6.5 + 4 ) = 10.5 inches
