Question :-

• the length of a rectangle is greater than the breadth by 18 cm .if both length and breadth are incresed by 6 cm then the area increases by 168cm². find the length amd breadth of the rectangle.

Solution :-

  • let the breadth of rectangle be x cm
  • then length of rectangle = x + 18 cm

and we know that,

area of rectangle = length × breadth

area = x × (x + 18)

= x² + 18x

now, when length and breadth are increased by 6 cm

then,

  • length = x + 6
  • breadth = x + 24

area of new rectangle = (x + 6) (x + 24)

= x² + 24x + 6x + 144

= x² + 30x + 144

now, according to the question (if both length and breadth are incresed by 6 cm then the area increases by 168cm² )

➪ x² + 30x + 144 = x² + 18x + 168

➪ x² - x² + 30x - 18x = 168 - 144

➪ 30x - 18x = 168 - 144

➪12x = 24

➪ x = 24/12

➪ x = 2

so, breadth of the rectangle is 2 cm

then, length of the rectangle = 2 + 18 = 20 cm

hence,

length = 20 cm

breadth = 2 cm
