Let the width be x.

Then the length will be x+4.

We know that perimeter = 2(l + b)

                            40  = 2(x+4+x)

                            40 = 2x + 8 + 2x

                             40 = 4x + 8

                             x = 8.

The length will be x + 4 = 12.

Therefore the length will be 12cm and breadth will be 8cm.
