area of triangle =

\frac{1}{2}  \times bc \times ad

 \frac{1}{2}  \times 12 \times 3

now, if the base was AB then

area =

 \frac{1}{2}  \times ab \times ce

we already now the area of triangle abc.

 \frac{1}{2}  \times ab \times 4 = 18

ab =  \frac{18 \times 2}{4}

ab = 9cm
