Answer:

During early flower development in Arabidopsis thaliana, primordia at the flanks of the inflorescence meristem adopt floral fate (Steeves and Sussex, 1989; Poethig, 2003). Subsequently, floral primordia enlarge and give rise to a distal floral meristem and a proximal floral stalk, the pedicel, that connects the floral base to the inflorescence stem. The floral meristem produces four types of organs – sepals, petals, stamens and carpels – in a characteristic whorled pattern (Bowman et al., 1989). The identity of individual floral organs is specified by stage 3 of flower development through expression of the floral homeotic genes (Parcy et al., 1998). The pedicel is also formed by this point (Smyth et al., 1990), but continues to elongate and display differential growth along the adaxial–abaxial axis, leading to rapid upward growth (Douglas and Riggs, 2005).
