By Pythagoras theorem

In triangle ABC

(AC)²=(AB)²+(BC)²

(AC)²=(12)²+(9)²

(AC)²=144+81

AC=√ 225

AC=15cm

Given:

✰ Length of a rectangle = 12 cm

✰ Breadth of a rectangle = 9 cm

To find:

✠ Length of the diagonal.

Solution:

This question is from the part mensuration, which deals with determining the length, breadth, height, perimeter, area and volume of plane figures and solids. The knowledge of mensuration is very useful in our daily life in various purposes.

Rectangle:

  • Rectangle is a parallelogram with one of its angles equal to 90°.

Here we will use formula to calculate the length of a diagonal. Putting the values in the formula and then doing the required calculations we can easily find out the diagonal of a rectangle.

Let's find out...✧

Length of the diagonal = √(a² + b²)

Where,

  • a is the length of a rectangle.
  • b is the breadth of a rectangle.

Putting the values in the formula, we have:

➤ Length of the diagonal = √(12² + 9²)

➤ Length of the diagonal = √(144 + 81)

➤ Length of the diagonal = √225

➤ Length of the diagonal = 15 cm

∴ The diagonal of a rectangle = 15 cm

More Formulae:

  • Perimeter of rectangle = 2( length + breadth )
  • Area of rectangle = length × breadth
  • Perimeter of square = 4 × side
  • Area of square = ( side )²
  • Length of the diagonal of square = √(2 × side )
