Since the rectangle is twice as long as it is wide, draw up a rectangle and label the two long sides as 2 and the short sides as 1. When the two long sides are added, you get a total of 4. Likewise with the short sides you get a total of 2. When placed in ratio form, you get a ratio of 4:2. To find the length of the long side you find 4/6 of 36 cm and you get a value of 24 cm and for the short sides, you find a 2/6 of 36 cm and you get a value of 12 cm. These values will be for the sum of the two similar sides. To find the value of one side you divide it by two. Therefore, you get a value of 12 cm for the length and 6 cm for the width. To find the area you multiply the length by the width and you obtain 72 cm^2 as the answer.
