Let the tangent touch the circle at point Q , O be the center and the point from which the tangent is drawn be P.

We know that radius drawn from the point of contact of tangent is always perpendicular to the tangent.

If we connect all point to form ΔPQO we can note that it is a right angled triangle , right angled at Q.

Given that PO = 13 cm. PQ = 12 cm.

Radius = OQ

By applying Pythagoras theorem to ΔPOQ,

OQ² = PO² - PQ²

⇒ OQ² = (13)² - (12)² = 25

⇒ OQ = 5 cm

Therefore radius of the circle is 5cm.
