Answer is 3.

As the triangle is an isosceles triangle, the median drawn from the vertex will create a 90 degree angle. And length of the base will be 4 cm ( 8/2 cm).

Now, According to pythagoras theorem,

AB² + BC² = AC²

(4)² + (x)² = (5)²

16 + x² = 25

x² = 25 - 16

x² = 9

x = 3.

h² = b² + hight²

5² = 4² + x²

25 = 16 + x²

25-16= x²

9 = x²

√9 = x

3 = x

the length of the median is 3cm .
