As the triangle is an isosceles triangle, the median drawn from the vertex will create a 90 degree angle. And length of the base will be 4 cm ( 8/2 cm).
Now, According to pythagoras theorem,
AB² + BC² = AC²
(4)² + (x)² = (5)²
16 + x² = 25
x² = 25 - 16
x² = 9
x = 3.
