Groundwater depletion most commonly occurs because of the frequent pumping of water from the ground. In cities, there are tar roads and great many buildings due to which water can't find its way tyo the aquifer. So, we attacking our life-giver in both ways; first, we are using to the greatest extent and on the other hand, we are not letting it seep into the ground. Such carelessness will apparently result into groundwater depletion.
