The light of distant stars is affected by 2 factors. They are:-

1.The earth's atmosphere.
2.The
interstellar dust.

Reason:- These type of stars are usually far away
so their light gets attenuated or absorbed in between the path before reaching Earth.

It happens either by absorption of it by interstellar dust or refraction of it by the earth's atmosphere.
