The limnetic zone is the well-lit, open surface waters in a lake away from the shore. The vegetation of the littoral zone surrounds this expanse of open water and it is above the profundal zone.

"The limnetic zone is found in Fresh water ecosystem.
The zone in the freshwater ecosystem which is composed fully of water is called as limnetic zone. It is a zone where photosynthesis occurs.
As we move downwards in this zone the "intensity of light" decreases as the result of which the rate of photosynthesis decreases due to less availability of oxygen and it reaches equilibrium with the respiration rate, a situation in which the photosynthesis rate equals the respiration rate.
This zone is composed of water, plankton, and nekton."
