The hungry lion and poor Androcles were left inside the arena for the lion to kill him and eat. But when the lion came pouncing to him, it just stopped and looked at him and immediately identified Androcles who was once his saviour and later a friend.
So the lion looked piteously and did not kill him but rather behaved like a friendly dog with him. So it was an act of gratitude by the lion for Androcles’ help that saved his life.
