The longitudinal wave can propagate in solid, liquid and gas but transverse wave can propagate only in solid, why?

Explanation:

They need a medium rigid enough so that it can propagate…And only solids have such a feature which liquids and gases doesn’t have

They can propagate through solid because solids have enough shear strength. The shear strength is one of the forces that hold the solid together, and prevent it from falling apart.

The case with liquids is that, liquids do not have that much shear strength. For eg. If you will take water in glass and then you will make it fall on the ground, it will normally flow which shows that it has no shear strength .

In case of solid and liquid, it can’t propagate because it doesn’t move in the direction of propagation.

THAT’S ALL!
