Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins return blood to the heart. Veins are generally larger in diameter, carry more blood volume and have thinner walls in proportion to their lumen. Arteries are smaller, have thicker walls in proportion to their lumen and carry blood under higher pressure than veins

The blood flows through arteries at very high pressure owing to their narrow lumen.

  • Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the cells and the organs.
  • Veins are the blood vessels that return blood from the organs to the heart.
  • Veins are generally larger in diameter, carry more blood volume and have thinner walls in proportion to their lumen i.e. they have a wide lumen. The blood flows through them at low pressure.
  • Arteries are smaller, have thicker walls in proportion to their lumen which means that they have narrow lumen. They carry blood under higher pressure than veins.
