lungs  contain alveoli which are tiny bag like structures which increase the surface area by 80 m² which is more than the surface area of the body which is 60 m² (isn't it fascinating)

So that more gaseous exchange takes place and the lungs can supply more oxygen to the blood which will generate more energy because mammals have high energy needs. They are warm blooded animals they use energy to maintain their body temp. Therefore lungs are designed to maximise area for gaseous exchange.
