Magnetic field is a vector. The diagram or sketch of a magnetic field will show how a magnetic force is acting in that area.

A uniform magnetic field is presented by parallel & equidistant straight lines all pointing in the same direction. In early times, force which acts between two bodies was found out. Say if we remove the other body, does it mean that there is no force present on that point? So to negate such conditions, the terminology of field was derived. Hence field is the force acting around a particular area of a body.
