The main cause of growth of canal irrigation in Northern India is huge number of tributary rivers. It serves two purposes :-

1. It suffices requirement of water to farmers for irrigation.

2. It provides relief during the flood, the water gets a passage to move out during the flood through canals.

Uttar Pradesh is the state that is getting most benefit of canal irrigation in India, thereafter  Punjab and Haryana.
